Library Media Center Happenings

Sail Ho, Mateys! LMC Events Ahead!

Whether it is fall, winter, spring or even summer, the Library Media Center (LMC) hosts a variety of learning events and activities.  An education that forms from meaning and rewarding experiences is one that becomes engrained in students' minds and hearts.  Thus, by creating activities that foster creativity, excitement, critical thinking, and independence as well as collaboration, the LMC hopes to enrich the learning experiences for all students and encourage the development of lifelong learners.  Please share in our excitement by reading about our happenings, and should any parents or community members desire to volunteer for an event, fill out the form located to the right.

Ongoing LMC Events & Activities

Lunch with the Librarian

Great conversations happen during lunch hour!  Let's take some time to talk about books.  Mrs. Brown will have lunch with 2-3 students twice a week.  If you are interested in sharing stories about reading and life, please contact Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Potter to sign up.

Pirate's Book Club

The LMC manages the Buccaneer Bay Pirate's Book Club.  Any student in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grades may become members.  Students meet every other week after school to discuss books they have read and enjoyed, create recommended book lists for the LMC, read silently or in pairs, and help plan and participate in LMC events.  They participate in other activities through the year as the books and topics they read about inspire them.  Come join in the fun, fellow mateys!  Contact Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Potter to become a member.

Upcoming LMC Events & Activities

Under Construction:

Tree House Loft

Last spring, Mrs. Brown and Mr. Jones, the manager of the school's maintenance, planned the building of a tree house loft for the library.  The image below inspired the design of the loft.  It will have a few levels, all accessible by ramps, in addition to many nooks for quiet reading and places to share books with friends.  It is currently being built and will be ready for its grand opening after the winter break. Stay tuned for more updates and pictures as the construction continues!

Opinions Wanted:

A Book Review Wiki

Mrs. Brown is in the process of creating a Book Review Wiki for the LMC.  Once it is up and running, students will be able to share their opinions for various books and other materials (such as videos, audiobooks, etc.) with their fellow pirates.  So, start brainstorming about some books you would like to write about and be ready to share some reviews!

Chopped - Technology Edition

This upcoming technology challenge event was inspired by the Food Network's series, Chopped.  In this activity, 4 student volunteers will be given a case of 3 or 4 technology resources (hardware or software).  Similar to the television show, there will be 3 rounds in which students will be asked to design a presentation or project on a certain topic using only the tools they were given.

The planning for the event is currently underway by library staff and the Pirate's Book Club.  However, it is set to take place next month after school one day.  Students who are interested in participating should contact Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Potter.

Past LMC Events & Activities

The 2012 Annual Book Swap!

This past spring, the LMC hosted another successful book swap.  Over 350 books were donated by students, teachers, and members of the community.  All of the Buccanner Bay Elementary School pirates had a chance to take books that were of interest to them at no cost.  After the event was over, only a handful of books remained and they were added to the LMC's collection.

As usual, everyone was excited to participate in this event.  Teachers brought their classes one by one to look at the books, and students' faces lit up as they found the perfect titles!

The LMC would like to thank the student helpers and the Pirate's Book Club for helping to manage the event.  We are continually amazed every year at the book swap turn out!  Expect to see it return again in 2013!!
