About the Library Media Center

The LMC Mission Statement

The Buccaneer Bay Elementary School Library Media Center (LMC) aims to serve all patrons—students, teachers, and parents—by:
  • Providing equal access to information resources that support the North Carolina educational standards and enhance the learning experiences of students and teachers;
  • Ensuring the freedom to access LMC materials and online resources, while also upholding and educating patrons on intellectual property rights;
  • Fostering creative thinking, problem solving, and lifelong learning through instruction and an environment that is student-centered and inquiry-based;
  • Creating and nourishing a multicultural environment which includes information materials that represent and instructional methods that serve diverse backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, and cultures;
  • Modeling, integrating, advocating, and providing instruction for technology resources that will enhance the educational experiences that occur within the school walls;
  • Advocating the LMC’s significance and purpose in the school community;
  • And by upholding the Library Bill of Rights as set forth by the American Library Association.

LMC Hours

Students and teachers can visit the library Monday through Friday, anytime between 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Individual classes will meet with Mrs. Brown in the LMC on their scheduled days and times.

 LMC Rules and Policies

LMC Rules for Students:

  • Be respectful to others and their property.
  • Raise your hand to speak (during story time and instruction).
  • Be good listeners when others are speaking.
  • Walk in the library--do not run.
  • Speak in quiet voices--do not yell or scream.
Check-Out (Loan) Policy:
  • Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades can check-out up to 5 books at one time.
  • Students in the 1st or 2nd grades can check-out 3 books at one time.
  • Kindergarten students may check-out 2 books at one time.
  • Teachers may check-out up to 8 books at one time.
  • There are no overdue fees, BUT if books are not returned within 2 weeks, the student or teacher cannot check-out anymore materials until they return the items or have a signed note (from parents if a student) indicating that they have lost the item.
  • Students and teachers may re-check materials that they wish to have for an additional week.
  • Parents or those responsible will be billed for any lost items or damages to LMC materials that were caused by their child.

Meet the Library Crew

Mrs. Megan Brown - Media Specialist

Mrs. Brown has a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and is a certified school media specialist.  She enjoys reading a variety of books, but absolutely loves learning about and exploring all forms of media (books, art, movies, photography, and music).   She loves spending time with her family—her husband, a helicopter pilot, and her dog.

Quick Facts About Mrs. Brown

  • Where did you grow up?  Mt. Jackson, Virginia
  • Where did you go to school?  I attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  While I was there I studied Media Arts and Design.  I also completed an online program at the University of South Carolina to receive my Master's.
  • What is your favorite book?  My favorite adult book is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  My favorite book for youth is Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan.
  • Do you have any pets?  I had numerous cats when I was growing up.  Now I only have a black Labrador retriever named Abby.
  • What are your hobbies? I like to read, write, play guitar, and get involved in arts and crafts projects.
  • Name something interesting about you?  I worked as a production assistant on two movies:  War of the Worlds (Paramount) and Evan Almighty (Universal Studios)

Mrs. Alice Potter - Library Paraprofessional

Born and raised in Wilmington, Mrs. Potter pursued a career as a public relations specialist for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  However, she soon decided that she wanted to work with young students and books, so she started working in the LMC!  She has wonderful family, including two children who also attend Buccaneer Bay Elementary and a husband who is a local business owner.

Quick Facts About Mrs. Potter

  • Where did you grow up?  Wilmington, North Carolina
  • Where did you go to school?  I attended East Carolina University in Greeneville, North Carolina.  I received a Bachelor's degree in Communication with a concentration in public relations.
  • What is your favorite book?  My favorite adult book is The Help by Kathryn Stockett, but my favorite book for youth is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
  • Do you have any pets?  I do not have any pets.  I love cats and dogs, but I'm allergic and sneeze a lot when I'm around them.
  • What are your hobbies? I love riding my bicycle and also enjoy kayaking in the Intracoastal Waterway near Wrightsville Beach.  Of course, I love to read too!
  • Name something interesting about you?  I have a twin brother, but we don't even look related.

Student Helpers in the LMC


Student Helpers assist in re-shelving books and with library activities.  We are so glad to have these volunteer pirates on board!

  • Maria Reyes is in Mrs. Miller's 3rd grade class.  She loves to read informational books about dolphins.
  • Shamus Richardson is in Mr. Collin's 3rd grade class.  He enjoys graphic novels and his favorite book is The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Zelznick.
  • Kelly Palmer is in Ms. Franklin's 4th grade class.  She reads a lot of books with poetry, but her favorite book is Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.
